4 Reasons for Stomach Bloating and Belly Fat by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia
In or Philadelphia Medical Weight Loss Center people come to us for all different reasons. Most people who come to us need help with losing weight while others may want to lose weight but they also want to improve their overall health and wellness. One of the main complaints that we usually hear from almost everyone is that their stomach is always bloated and / or they just cannot get rid of their belly fat. There are many different reasons why a person may be bloated or not able to get rid of their belly fat and today I am going to discuss a few of them.
Reason Number 1:
One of the most common reasons for having difficult to lose belly fat is that there is too much insulin in the body. When your insulin level is high your body is in fat storage mode. Most of the calories that you are eating during this time or going to be stored as body fat. You start developing abdominal fat also known as visceral fat. This can also lead to your liver getting fatty and can eventually cause fat to develop around other organs and into our stomachs and causing distended belly. This can also cause a sagging stomach as well. And of course let’s not forget the love handles and back fat. Eating too much high-sugar fruits, starchy carbohydrates, candies and beverages containing sugar can all increase your insulin level and cause you to gain fat.
Reason Number 2:
High cortisol levels can also increase your belly fat. cortisol is produced by your adrenal glands and is considered to be a stress hormone. When you are physically and mentally over stressed your body produces more cortisol and cortisol in turn increase insulin production. And we know that high levels of insulin increases stomach fat. Cortisol turns protein into glucose which causes a spike in insulin production. Because cortisol increases your blood sugar and your insulin you eventually develop a insulin resistance and your body cannot properly control blood sugar; now you can possibly develop Diabetes. So your body is now producing high levels of insulin but it’s not effective in lower blood sugar levels.
Reason Number 3:
Another reason for stomach bloating is that you are consuming too many sugar alcohols such as erythritol. Sugar alcohol can cause stomach bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. Personally, I cannot consume large amounts of erythritol. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I was trying to restrict my sugars and starchy carbohydrates. For my birthday, my wonderful wife made me a sugar-free, low carb cheesecake and she used erythritol. When I took my first bite it was absolutely delicious and suffice to say it was my birthday so I indulged a bit too much and I paid the price later.
My stomach was a mess, nothing but pain and gas. I learned this lesson the hard way. If you are maintaining a restricted carbohydrate diet, you have to be careful of overconsumption sugar alcohols. There are other sugar substitutes that you can use. I now use monk fruit and monk fruit extract. If you do use sugar alcohols please use small quantities.
Reason Number 4:
Finally you may just be overeating or eating too many times during the day. When you eat it takes about 4 – 5 hours for the food that you are eating to be processed and go through your stomach. It takes about 5-6 hours for the food to go through your small intestine and then it can take anywhere from 10 hours to 30 hours to go through your large intestine depending on what you ate.
So when you are eating something every hour you could be overloading your system. You have to give your body time to digest all of the food that you were eating. And when you are eating take your time you don’t want to shovel everything and anything into your body as fast as you can. Be mindful of the foods you are eating and the quantity of food that you are eating.

Top 5 Diet Hacks For Fast Weight Loss
Today we are going to discuss five simple hacks for all of us with busy and hectic lifestyles that are short on time.
The first simple hack is to practice some type of intermittent fasting. My version of intermittent fasting is very safe and effective. It has been very successful helping our patients lose weight.
Personally, I like the 16:8 schedule for intermittent fasting. This means that you are going to choose an 8-hour time period during the day; and that is when you are going to eat the majority of your meals. During this 8-hour time period you are going to eat all of your food groups, your proteins, vegetables, healthy fats, healthy carbohydrates and fruit. Now, if you get hungry outside of this 8-hour window you are allowed to eat healthy proteins, vegetables and your healthy fats.
The great thing about this protocol is that you get to choose when you are going to eat. Many people like to start eating at 11 a.m. and finish at 7 p.m.. While I have other patients that work a night shift and choose their 8 hour time period at times that are convenient for them.
Diet hack number 2 is to keep your menu simple. Most of my meals are very simple and easy. I make sure that I have a good healthy protein like fish or chicken and I enjoy large amounts of healthy vegetables. If you are one of our patients you know that most nights for dinner my wife and I enjoy large amounts of roasted vegetables.
We will chop up a head of cauliflower, broccoli, red yellow and green peppers then spread them over two large baking sheets and season them with black pepper, garlic and oregano.
For lunch, I usually have another small portion of protein with lots of vegetables. Even if you are out, lunch is easy because you can order a something like a grilled chicken Caesar salad and just have them put the dressing on the side.
For breakfast, I either have a smoothie or two eggs with a small avocado. Please make sure that you are using herbs and spices because you want your food to be enjoyable. Just because we are trying to be healthy and keep a good healthy weight doesn’t mean that we have to be eating food that tastes like cardboard. There are times when I do try to make my meals a bit more elaborate but this is usually short-lived because it just takes too much time and effort.
Diet hack number three is to plan out your meals in advance. If you make your menu a week in advance it makes life so much easier. It also does quite a bit to ensure your success. If you make your menu in advance for each day you know exactly what you are going to be eating and at what time of the day. This keeps you from doing what I call free-styling. And free-styling is just winging it and eating whenever you get hungry and grabbing foods that are quick and easy.
Diet hack number four is to be a creature of habit. Personally, I can eat the same thing everyday. I have changed my way of thinking about food. To me, food is fuel, food is energy. Because of this, I am able to eat lots of the same foods everyday. My wife on the other hand, needs more variety. But even she, has her go to foods.
Diet hack number 5 is to make sure that you have some quick and easy go to meals if you don’t have time to sit down and eat a meal. For me this means having a smoothie that’s quick and easy to make or having one of our protein shakes for a meal. For the best of both worlds to make sure that I am getting the proper nutrition and fuel to help my body function at peak capacity I will usually make a smoothie with our protein powder. I love this because it only takes about 3 minutes and I have everything I need help control my appetite for several hours and it gives me the fuel and energy to function all day long.
I hope you find these 5 diet hacks helpful and share them with your family and friends. In today’s post I am reviewing a report presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna that linked being overweight/obese to 12 different types of cancer, which cancers are linked to obesity and another report that linked bariatric surgery to a 61% decrease in one of the most common types of cancer in New Zealand.

The World Cancer Research Fund has identified 12 different types of cancer that can be attributed to being overweight/obese. On Thursday they released their “Continuous Update Project “: Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: A Global Perspective.
This report was given at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna. The report showed how being overweight/obese can be attributed to the development of multiple types of cancer.
These cancers include:
- Liver cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Advanced prostate cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Mouth and throat cancer
- Bowel cancer
- Postmenopausal breast cancer
- Gallbladder cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Esophagus cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Cancer of the womb
There are many reasons why being overweight/obese can be linked to cancer. Fat can cause a multitude of hormonal cancers such as endometrial cancer and breast cancer. Extra body weight can also cause a long-term state of inflammation and this can cause a spike in insulin which can cause various cancers to develop. Being overweight can also cause a person not to be physically active and this has also been shown to be linked to cancer development.
Other research that was presented at the European Congress on obesity revealed that undergoing bariatric surgery was related to 61% decrease in developing malignant melanoma which is one of the most common types of cancer in New Zealand. These reports present us with a strong link to being overweight/obese and developing some type of cancer.
