8 Totally Delicious Holiday Recipes for Healthy Weight Loss
Happy Holidays to you all! It’s cold outside and this is the time of year that I usually like to start eating and enjoying comfort food. Apple pie with hot cocoa! Just the thought of it makes me hungry. But I really don’t want to gain back any of the 80 lbs that I have lost. You see, I have the same struggle as you do. I like food, I am Diabetic and I am a stress eater. So, even though I am a Philadelphia weight loss doctor, I still have the same appetite and cravings that you do.
When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I had a difficult time following a diet plan that would help me lose weight. And more importantly, help with my diabetes. I just could not do it on my own. The weight loss pills, Phentermine was the only thing that helped control my appetite and cravings. Taking the Phentermine, along with a sensible diet plan and walking for my exercise plan helped me lose 80 lbs! And I have kept it off. I actually maintain this weight loss without continuing to take the diet pills. Appetite-suppressant medications help control your appetite and cravings but you still need to follow a proper meal plan. For me personally, the Phentermine just made the whole process much easier and doable.
Now I am able to maintain a proper diet and keep the weight off without taking Phentermine. So if you are like me, you shouldn’t have to take the weight loss medications forever. Now let’s get back to the comfort foods! Lucky for me, my wife Elyse, has been busy in the kitchen making new weight loss friendly recipes for some of my favorite foods and I’m going to share them with you today.
Here are 8 of her recipes…
Delicious Strawberry Smoothie Recipe
- frozen strawberries – 4 oz
- Stevia or granulated monk fruit to taste
- Vanilla Stevia drops – 5
- Orange Stevia drops – 5

Apple Cobbler
- Apple – 1 large cut it into slices
- Cinnamon – just a little pinch
- Pinch of cinnamon
- Granulated monk fruit – 1 teaspoon
- Mix everything together then place into an oven-safe dish. Next, place it in your oven and bake it for about 30 minutes at 350° Fahrenheit.
- You can top it with a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Yummy Sweet Treat Strawberry Sorbet
- Frozen strawberries – 4 ounces
- The juice of one large lemon
- Granulated monk fruit
Add everything to your blender and blend until it’s nice and smooth. Then just pour it into your glass and enjoy. If you like you can even add a bit of water to make the consistency a little bit less thick.
Apple Grape and Cucumber Salad
- Apple – one large, make sure to remove the core and seeds and then cut it into cubes or slices whichever you prefer.
- Cucumber – 1 large, cut into slices
- Water – 1 tablespoon
- Apple cider vinegar – 2 tablespoons
- Salt – to your taste
- Garlic – to your taste

- Granulated monk fruit
Slice the cucumber into thin slices and either slice or chop your apples. Combine the apple cider vinegar and the water together and next mix in the salt, garlic, pepper, and granulated monk fruit to your taste. Now all you have to do is combine all of the ingredients into a good size ball and enjoy.
Elyse’s Favorite Salad
- Romaine lettuce – 1/2 head, chopped
- Large apple – cored and seeded and chop or cut into wedges.
- Red onion- small sliced
Now, all we have to do is combine everything into a large bowl and enjoy. If you like you can make your own salad dressing with water, apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, and a sugar substitute.
Homemade Chicken Broth
- chicken – about 24 ounces
- water – nine cups
- poultry seasoning – 1 teaspoon
- garlic powder – 1 teaspoon
- celery salt – 1 teaspoon
- pepper – 1 teaspoon
- onion salt – 1 teaspoon
- sea salt – 1 tbsp
This is a really great recipe and it’s so easy to make. Just combine all of the ingredients into a large pot. My Mother would have a pot specifically designated as her soup pot. Cook this until the chicken is done. When we make this recipe we usually cook it for about 40 minutes or a little bit less. Just make sure that your chicken is totally cooked because you do not want to eat uncooked chicken. when it’s finished cooking just take out for chicken and you can save that for some of your other meals. And just refrigerate or freeze the broth to be used later.
French onion soup
- onion – 1 vidalia onion
- garlic powder – one teaspoon
- beef broth – one cup of
- onion salt – one teaspoon
- pepper – one teaspoon
Take your onion and cut it into wedges. You can do this by using an apple slicer. Place the onion in a baking pan, place a piece of foil underneath it. and then season it with your garlic powder, onion salt, and pepper. Add about one-quarter cup of the beef broth and then wrap it in the foil. place the onion and the baking pan in the oven and bake it for about 60 Minutes at 350° Fahrenheit. When it is done place it into a soup bowl and add the rest of the beef broth. I usually like to enjoy this with a few slices of Melba toast.
Onion soup – green onion soup
- parsley – one teaspoon
- green onions – eleven
- dill – one half teaspoon
- paprika – one half teaspoon
- thyme – one half teaspoon
- parsley – one teaspoon
- salt – one half teaspoon
- vegetable broth – two cups
- liquid stevia – three to five drops
- celery seed – one quarter teaspoon
- red pepper flakes – just a tiny pinch
Let’s start this delicious recipe by steaming the green onions and then chop them up and place them in a saucepan. Add some of the vegetable broth and the sauteed onions for about 3 minutes. Next add the red pepper flakes, celery seed, dill, thyme, paprika, parsley, salt, and liquid stevia and saute for about 3 minutes. Next, add the rest of the broth, reduce the heat and let simmer for approximately 35 minutes. When it is finished let it cool down a bit and enjoy.

4 Reasons for Stomach Bloating and Belly Fat by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia
In or Philadelphia Medical Weight Loss Center people come to us for all different reasons. Most people who come to us need help with losing weight while others may want to lose weight but they also want to improve their overall health and wellness. One of the main complaints that we usually hear from almost everyone is that their stomach is always bloated and / or they just cannot get rid of their belly fat. There are many different reasons why a person may be bloated or not able to get rid of their belly fat and today I am going to discuss a few of them.
Reason Number 1:
One of the most common reasons for having difficult to lose belly fat is that there is too much insulin in the body. When your insulin level is high your body is in fat storage mode. Most of the calories that you are eating during this time or going to be stored as body fat. You start developing abdominal fat also known as visceral fat. This can also lead to your liver getting fatty and can eventually cause fat to develop around other organs and into our stomachs and causing distended belly. This can also cause a sagging stomach as well. And of course let’s not forget the love handles and back fat. Eating too much high-sugar fruits, starchy carbohydrates, candies and beverages containing sugar can all increase your insulin level and cause you to gain fat.
Reason Number 2:
High cortisol levels can also increase your belly fat. cortisol is produced by your adrenal glands and is considered to be a stress hormone. When you are physically and mentally over stressed your body produces more cortisol and cortisol in turn increase insulin production. And we know that high levels of insulin increases stomach fat. Cortisol turns protein into glucose which causes a spike in insulin production. Because cortisol increases your blood sugar and your insulin you eventually develop a insulin resistance and your body cannot properly control blood sugar; now you can possibly develop Diabetes. So your body is now producing high levels of insulin but it’s not effective in lower blood sugar levels.
Reason Number 3:
Another reason for stomach bloating is that you are consuming too many sugar alcohols such as erythritol. Sugar alcohol can cause stomach bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. Personally, I cannot consume large amounts of erythritol. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I was trying to restrict my sugars and starchy carbohydrates. For my birthday, my wonderful wife made me a sugar-free, low carb cheesecake and she used erythritol. When I took my first bite it was absolutely delicious and suffice to say it was my birthday so I indulged a bit too much and I paid the price later.
My stomach was a mess, nothing but pain and gas. I learned this lesson the hard way. If you are maintaining a restricted carbohydrate diet, you have to be careful of overconsumption sugar alcohols. There are other sugar substitutes that you can use. I now use monk fruit and monk fruit extract. If you do use sugar alcohols please use small quantities.
Reason Number 4:
Finally you may just be overeating or eating too many times during the day. When you eat it takes about 4 – 5 hours for the food that you are eating to be processed and go through your stomach. It takes about 5-6 hours for the food to go through your small intestine and then it can take anywhere from 10 hours to 30 hours to go through your large intestine depending on what you ate.
So when you are eating something every hour you could be overloading your system. You have to give your body time to digest all of the food that you were eating. And when you are eating take your time you don’t want to shovel everything and anything into your body as fast as you can. Be mindful of the foods you are eating and the quantity of food that you are eating.

Keto Diet and Intermitent Fasting Part 1
If this is your first time visiting our website and you would like information on our medical weight loss program just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will schedule your free weight loss consultation. This article is part 1 about the basics of following a keto diet and combining it with Intermittent fasting. This article is not intended to be used as medical advice and before starting any type of nutrition plan you should discuss it with your Physician. If you have any health issues such as diabetes do not attempt these diet plans without being supervised by a medical provider.
Many people are looking to follow a ketogenic diet and they’re looking to combined it with intermittent fasting. What I have found to be the easiest way to begin intermittent fasting is trying not to eat breakfast. A general rule of thumb can be that you simply eat only when you are hungry.
So if you are not hungry first thing in the morning you do not have to force yourself to eat. Many new people come into our office thinking that they are following an intermittent fasting program that they designed themselves and they are not losing weight on their own. For most of these people the reason why they are not losing weight is that they are eating when they are not hungry.
They are still following the model that has everyone eating 6 times a day. You see, when you have a good healthy dinner and then you go to bed your body is fasting while you are asleep. when you wake up in the morning your body should normally be in fat burning mode. That’s right, your body it’s starting to burn its own fat.
Then when you have that big breakfast that causes your insulin levels to rise and this causes your sugar levels to decrease which will will make you hungry a few hours later. When you wake up in the morning, if you are hungry or not really depends upon what you ate the night before.
If you are eating the right types of food for dinner, you really should not wake up hungry the next morning. If you are eating the right foods and following an intermittent fasting eating protocol you should wake up in the morning not being hungry.
When I personally first started intermittent fasting I didn’t really get hungry until 11 a.m. . So for me my first meal of the day was at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and dinner. As time went on and my body adjusted to this way of eating I pushed my first meal of the day back to 12:00 noon, then 1pm and now I have my first meal of the day at 2 pm .
If for some reason I wake up very hungry in the morning I have a breakfast consisting of good healthy protein, good healthy fats and vegetables. If I do not have time to prepare a proper breakfast I will make a protein drink with our protein powder mixed with a cup of water, a teaspoon of MCT oil and 2-3 handfuls of a leafy green vegetable.
People who are practicing intermittent fasting for some time and our now an advanced level of intermittent fasting have a goal of eating 2 meals a day and some eventually go to one meal a day. Many of our Intermittent fasting people eat 2 to 3 meals a day with the allowed snacks but most people follow our Pseudo-Intermittent fasting diet. With this program people eat all of the food groups for an 8 hour period and outside of those 8 hours you can eat your protein, vegetables and healthy fats but try to avoid your starchy carbohydrates like bread, pizza, pasta, rice, etc… and fruit.
I hope you have enjoyed this article. Next week I will be posting part 2. In part 2, I will review some of the better food choices for a ketogenic diet.
If you are looking to lose weight or improve your overall health and wellness I invite you to call and schedule your free weight loss consultation. Just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will gladly schedule your free weight loss consultation.
