Keto Diet and Intermitent Fasting Part 1
If this is your first time visiting our website and you would like information on our medical weight loss program just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will schedule your free weight loss consultation. This article is part 1 about the basics of following a keto diet and combining it with Intermittent fasting. This article is not intended to be used as medical advice and before starting any type of nutrition plan you should discuss it with your Physician. If you have any health issues such as diabetes do not attempt these diet plans without being supervised by a medical provider.
Many people are looking to follow a ketogenic diet and they’re looking to combined it with intermittent fasting. What I have found to be the easiest way to begin intermittent fasting is trying not to eat breakfast. A general rule of thumb can be that you simply eat only when you are hungry.
So if you are not hungry first thing in the morning you do not have to force yourself to eat. Many new people come into our office thinking that they are following an intermittent fasting program that they designed themselves and they are not losing weight on their own. For most of these people the reason why they are not losing weight is that they are eating when they are not hungry.
They are still following the model that has everyone eating 6 times a day. You see, when you have a good healthy dinner and then you go to bed your body is fasting while you are asleep. when you wake up in the morning your body should normally be in fat burning mode. That’s right, your body it’s starting to burn its own fat.
Then when you have that big breakfast that causes your insulin levels to rise and this causes your sugar levels to decrease which will will make you hungry a few hours later. When you wake up in the morning, if you are hungry or not really depends upon what you ate the night before.
If you are eating the right types of food for dinner, you really should not wake up hungry the next morning. If you are eating the right foods and following an intermittent fasting eating protocol you should wake up in the morning not being hungry.
When I personally first started intermittent fasting I didn’t really get hungry until 11 a.m. . So for me my first meal of the day was at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and dinner. As time went on and my body adjusted to this way of eating I pushed my first meal of the day back to 12:00 noon, then 1pm and now I have my first meal of the day at 2 pm .
If for some reason I wake up very hungry in the morning I have a breakfast consisting of good healthy protein, good healthy fats and vegetables. If I do not have time to prepare a proper breakfast I will make a protein drink with our protein powder mixed with a cup of water, a teaspoon of MCT oil and 2-3 handfuls of a leafy green vegetable.
People who are practicing intermittent fasting for some time and our now an advanced level of intermittent fasting have a goal of eating 2 meals a day and some eventually go to one meal a day. Many of our Intermittent fasting people eat 2 to 3 meals a day with the allowed snacks but most people follow our Pseudo-Intermittent fasting diet. With this program people eat all of the food groups for an 8 hour period and outside of those 8 hours you can eat your protein, vegetables and healthy fats but try to avoid your starchy carbohydrates like bread, pizza, pasta, rice, etc… and fruit.
I hope you have enjoyed this article. Next week I will be posting part 2. In part 2, I will review some of the better food choices for a ketogenic diet.

In today’s article I am going to give you three delicious recipes for keto smoothies. In the smoothies I do have fruit as ingredients to make sure that follow the proper portion sizes that I have recommended here. For the banana, make sure that are using a small banana, preferably one that fits across your palm and for the other fruits I recommend 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup. Make sure that you do not use more than 1/2 cup of any fruit. It would be even better if you only used 1/4 cup but if you are like my lovely wife and like your smoothies a bit on the sweeter side, you can use 1/2 cup.
The recipes are for a Keto Coconut Banana Avocado Smoothie, a Keto Banana Flax Smoothie and a Keto Blueberry Hemp Fat Bomb Smoothie.
While the children were home over the recent holidays these were some of the favorite smoothies that everyone enjoyed for breakfast. And to be totally honest with you the smoothies helped me stay on my diet plan and helped lose weight over the holiday season. I stress eat just like most people and over the course of September, October and November I gained an additional 20 pounds. This put me at a little bit over 200 pounds and it caused a big spike in my blood sugar levels. And if you are one of our weight loss patients you know that I am diabetic and that I have to work hard at maintaining a lower blood sugar level.
So, I picked one of the best times of the year to go on a diet! On December 1st, I decided to start and follow my weight loss plan. And as of writing this article today I am 177. The smoothies were one of the main ingredients to my weight loss plan. They are creamy, loaded with good healthy fats and they satisfied my cravings thus eliminating my appetite. Please give them a try and next time you’re in the office let me know what you think. And if you have any other ideas for recipes for smoothies please let me know and I could post them here on our blog.

I am also going to discuss a topic – question that many new patients coming into our office are asking me about. And this question is about the Keto Diet or ketogenic diet. It seems that many new patients coming into the office have already started some type of ketogenic diet on their own and are suffering from diarrhea. And they have no idea why this is happening.
So, in this article after I give you the recipes for the smoothies, I will review why some people may initially experience diarrhea on a ketogenic diet, when they try doing on their own. So, there you have it, 3 of my favorite recipes for smoothies that will help satisfy your appetite and cravings, provide you with excellent nutrition and help satisfy your sweet tooth.
Now I am going to get into a somewhat sensitive topic and that is why do some people suffer from diarrhea when they first start the ketogenic diet. In my experience one of the main causes of diarrhea on the ketosis diet is that people are eating too many saturated fats.
The ketogenic diet does focus on eating good healthy fats, but your body has to adapt this way of eating overtime. Eating foods that contain good healthy fats such as salmon, avocados and olive oil are excellent when you are following the ketogenic diet, but they are also quite good for you even if you are not following a ketogenic diet. Eating these types of natural foods that are normally part of our everyday diet is usually not the problem. Eating these natural foods should normally be part of everyone’s diet plan. They promote better overall health, wellness and will help you lose weight.
But when people begin the ketogenic diet in addition to eating these regular healthy foods like salmon and avocados, they supplement with additional fats like coconut oil, MCT oil and frill oil. And sometimes all of this additional fat is too much for the body to handle. You see when you eat fatty foods your body produces more bile.
This is a normal healthy function that goes on in our body every day over lives. When we eat any type of fatty food are gallbladder automatically produces more bile and that helps the process of digesting our food. However, when people start supplementing with extra fats the body may produce extra bile that serves as a lubricant for our intestines and colon and this can cause diarrhea.
So, one of the easiest ways to help with diarrhea when starting a ketogenic diet is to decrease the amount of saturated fats that you are eating. Simply try to reduce a few of the extra oils that you have added your diet such as frill oil, coconut oil, MCT oil and any other extra oils that you may be consuming. And try not to add any extra fat to your diet; for example – try not to add extra butter to your meals just to add some additional fat.
Another thing that I have found with new patients coming into the office is that they have added bulletproof coffee to their normal daily routine. And since doing this they have been having diarrhea almost immediately after finishing their cup of bulletproof coffee. And this exemplifies my point that consuming too many fats can be causing your diarrhea. Stick with the normal fats that are in your everyday normal diet and you should be fine.

Intermittent Fasting and The Ketosis – Keto Diet Secrets Unlocked by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia
In today’s article I am going to give you the basics of intermittent fasting and ketosis. You can call it intermittent fasting and ketosis 101. But first, I would like to offer you a free consultation with our weight loss doctors if you are interested in our weight loss program. Just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will gladly schedule you for your complimentary weight loss consultation with one of our medical providers.
Before I get into the basics of intermittent fasting and ketosis I do have to tell you that fasting and ketosis type diets are not meant for everyone and before you start any type of nutritional changes you should discuss it with a medical or health care provider. Various types of fasting practices and keto or ketosis type diets have been part of our worlds Global culture for decades, if not centuries. Because of this there is an abundance of information available to us for a multitude of fasting practices and Keto – ketosis diets. Some of this information is good and some of it is bad and that is why you should always consult with a medical or health care provider who is knowledgeable in these types of nutrition practices.
Now to begin with the very basics ketosis or keto diet simply means that instead of your body burning fuel for energy it’s burning ketones. Ketones are made by your body burning its own fat for fuel. Simply stated, when you stop eating sugar and foods that convert to sugar your body will burn its own body fat for fuel.
It breaks the body fat down into ketones and ketones are a superior fuel source for your body as compared to sugar. When following a keto diet, you have to make sure that you are giving your body all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that it needs on a daily basis to continue running at peak capacity. And that means that you have to eat quality foods loaded with great nutrition.
Intermittent fasting, simply means that you will not be eating all day long. Intermittent fasting is a protocol of eating in which you are going to eat during a set period of time in the day. The number of hours you allow yourself to eat during the day varies for different people. Some people allow themselves 8 hours to eat all of their meals and for the rest of the 16 hours of the day and night they are not eating but they are definitely drinking liquids. For most people this usually decreases the number of meals they are eating during the day.
Intermittent fasting and ketosis have a similar goal. The goal is to reduce the number of times in the day that your body is producing extra insulin. One of the reasons for this is because when your body has an increase or a spike in insulin production most of what you are eating and drinking is going to be stored as body fat.
This goal is not to totally stop our body from producing insulin. The goal is to limit the production of excess insulin. When there is continuously an excessive level of insulin in the body, the body eventually becomes insulin resistant.
Most people begin intermittent fasting with just eating three meals a day during an 8-hour period. As opposed to eating 6 to 7 meals a day. They also try not to snack during the day but if they do need to have a snack it is usually vegetables or a good healthy fat. If, a person is truly dedicated to making this lifestyle change they may even decrease their eating to 2 meals a day and a good healthy snack.
Please be aware that these types of diets do not endorse starving yourself or drastically reducing your number of calories per day. Reducing the number of meals eaten during the day does not mean to drastically reduce your calories. Personally with my diet I try to eat all of my calories and nutrients during an 8 hour period of time. Believe me, I am eating during these 8 hours. I am eating three meals a day during an 8-hour period of time and I am giving my body the total 1600 calories that it needs during this time period. It is said that this type of protocol increases growth hormone production and this helps your body burn fat and maintain your lean muscle.
For your meals, it is usually recommended that you have an adequate amount of healthy protein, lots of vegetables and some good healthy fat. I usually tell our weight loss patients that a simple basic plan is to make sure that when you are having a meal half of your plate is it loaded up with good healthy vegetables and on the other side of your plate 1/4 of your plate should be your healthy protein and the other quarter should be a healthy carbohydrate and if you are following a keto diet it should be a healthy fat, like an avocado.
Before coming to us many of our patients have decided to follow the keto diet but they have had a difficult time with getting rid of the starchy carbohydrate type foods like pasta, rice, pizza, etc… and that is perfectly normal. We just have them reduce the portion sizes of these carbohydrates over the course of time. The great thing about the body is that it adapts to this type of eating and as you continue with it, most people do not crave carbohydrates or sweets at all. The reason for this is that you’re giving the body all of the nutrition it needs in the form of good healthy protein, lots of nutrient dense vegetables and good healthy fats like olive oil and avocados.
Many people come into the office for the first time telling us that they are trying to follow a keto diet but they are just always hungry and this is usually easy to fix by just adding good healthy fats to the diet. When people first come into the office and tell us that they are constantly hungry, it usually means that they are not eating enough good healthy protein, vegetables and good healthy fats.
For years people have been afraid of eating good healthy fats because it was thought that they cause you to gain weight, but that is not the case. It’s too much insulin in your body and being insulin resistant and or weight loss resistant that is making us overweight.
So you see the keto diet and intermittent fasting, share the common goal of reducing the amount of excess insulin in the body. Excessive levels of insulin in the body can lead to many significant health problems.
Here are some symptoms to be on the lookout for to help you determine if you are insulin resistant and or weight loss resistant: you’re hungry all the time, you are depressed, irritable, grumpy, you have cravings, you have high blood pressure, you have excessive belly fat, you lack mental clarity and focus, your bad cholesterol levels are high and your memory might not be as good as it was in the past.
Many people start a keto diet in addition to intermittent fasting for the purpose of losing weight and these nutritional practices can definitely help you lose weight but they can also help improve your overall health and wellness.
I hope you found this article interesting. Again I must tell you that before beginning any type of nutritional program to speak with a doctor or a licensed healthcare provider.

Intermittent Fasting Made Simple by Medical Weight Loss Philadelphia
Because I am getting so many questions from our weight loss patients about intermittent fasting, today’s article is going to be about simplifying the whole approach to intermittent fasting. So many people coming into the office for help with weight loss are already practicing some type of intermittent fasting but they are making it very complicated. Intermittent fasting is actually very simple. The easiest form of intermittent fasting is to eat when you are hungry. You do not have to follow any type of timetable and eat 5 or 6 times a day, you just eat when your body tells you to eat. Please make sure that you discuss any type of dietary changes with your family doctor or visit us. To schedule your free weight loss consultation call us at 215-821-7336.
So let’s first start with defining what intermittent fasting is. Intermittent fasting is not really a diet, it does not tell you specifically what type of foods that you should be eating. Intermittent fasting is simply periods of eating and fasting. Basically it’s a time table or pattern of eating.
When I consult with weight loss patients and they are interested in doing some type of intermittent fasting program what I usually do is have them start out with eating 3 meals a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner people can snack on vegetables. Some of the questions I get from people about intermittent fasting is if they can take their vitamins and supplements while practicing intermittent fasting. In my personal experience taking your supplements and vitamins is fine while practicing intermittent fasting. As far as beverages go, I usually recommend that people stick to water.
With intermittent fasting there are two very important things that you need to remember. The first is that this is a fasting protocol. It is a series of short fasts followed by eating. The second important thing is that you have to be mindful of the type of food that you are eating.
So many people coming into the office now are practicing some type of intermittent fasting. But the problem is that they are eating tons of starchy carbohydrates like pizza, rice and potatoes. This totally defeats the purpose of intermittent fasting. Because it will force your body to produce a tremendous amount of insulin and this is commonly called insulin spikes.
The purpose of intermittent fasting is to limit the number of insulin spikes our body experiences during the day. Please remember that even though you have reduced the number of times you are eating during the day you still cannot eat whatever you want. Personally, my meals are usually made up of a large amount of vegetables, a modest amount of protein and good healthy fats like olive oil, avocados and ghee.
I do not consider my personal diet a low carb diet because I eat at least 5 to 7 cups of vegetable a day. And vegetables can be considered a carbohydrate. Vegetables are good carbohydrates as compared to starchy carbohydrates like pizza, pasta, rice and potatoes. Our bodies require the nutrients In vegetables to maintain normal function of all the systems in our body. So regardless of any timetable or schedule that you may set for yourself; please remember that your meals have to consist of a healthy balance of vegetables, healthy protein and good healthy fats. Also please keep in mind that there are many eating timetables and protocols for intermittent fasting. So you have to find the one that is best for you. Just because your best friend might be following a particular intermittent fasting pattern does not mean that it’s going to be good for you.
There are several different models of intermittent fasting. The most popular type is simply choosing 8 hours during the day in which you will be eating all or most of your food. There are also models in which you choose a 6 hour window and even a 4 hour window to eat most of your meals. I find that starting out with eating breakfast, lunch and dinner is the easiest and most successful model to follow when beginning intermittent fasting. After following the 3 meals a day model people usually try the 8 hour model that is so popular.
When a person first comes to our practice and is interested in intermittent fasting we will usually have them start with eating 3 meals a day. We see how they do with that eating schedule and then we can tweak the diet as time goes on. If you are attempting to practice intermittent fasting on your own please do not be overly aggressive, start slowly. Do not go from eating five or six times a day down to just one meal a day or even worse… going days without eating. You should really be working with a health and nutrition coach and that’s why we are here for you. If you, a friend or loved one need help with improving overall health and wellness and losing weight I invite you all to call and schedule a free consultation with us. Call 215-821-7336 and schedule your free weight loss consultation.

Many people are fine following a diet plan that includes a little bit of everything while others may need the to follow a plan that is a bit more specific. I am a perfect example of this because I am diabetic and there are certain foods that I should definitely avoid because they will spike my blood sugar levels way too high. So, whatever your specific needs are we will develop a plan specifically for you.
In today’s article we are going to give you two great recipes to help you lose weight with our weight loss program. Today’s recipes are for a Blueberry Ketosis Smoothie and a Chocolate Banana Cheesecake. These recipes are great if you are following a low carbohydrate diet.
Here are the recipes:
Blueberry Coconut Ketosis Smoothie XVIII
- Coconut milk – 1 cup
- Blueberries – ¼ cup
- Protein powder – 1 scoop
- Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
- Coconut oil or MCT oil – 1 teaspoon
- Ice – ½ cup
- Combine in a blender, blend and enjoy!
Chocolate Banana Cheesecake (cupcakes)
I have coconut oil as an ingredient in this recipe but if you do not like the taste of coconut oil you can use refined coconut oil that does not have the coconut taste. This recipe has 2 parts, one for the cake / base and one for the topping.
Ingredients for the cake:
- cream cheese – 5 ounces
- butter – 1.5 ounces
- coconut oil – ¼ cup
- erythritol – 1 tablespoon
- vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
- optional: banana extract – ¼ teaspoon
- Mix together
Ingredients for the topping:
- Coconut oil – ½ cup
- Cocoa powder – 1 teaspoon
- Erythritol – 1 teaspoon
- Mix together
Add the cake mixture to a cupcake tray. Use a spoon and fill the cupcake tray with the cheesecake mixture. Make sure to leave room for the topping, so do not fill the cheesecake batter to the top.
Next, place this in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. Then take your tray out of the refrigerator and top the cakes with the chocolate topping. Finally place the tray into the refrigerator and leave it until it sets nice and firm. I usually like to leave mine in refrigerator overnight.

Creamy Berry Smoothie
- heavy cream – ¼ cup
- cream cheese – ¼ cup
- Chia seeds – 1 tablespoon
- berries = 1/4 cup
- milk – one half to one cup
- ice cubes – 5 to 6
- Combine all of the ingredients into a blender, blend and enjoy.
Pumpkin Spice 1 Minute Low Carb Cake
- egg – 1
- almond flour – 1 tablespoon
- pumpkin spice – 1 teaspoon
- baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- stevia – 1 to 2 packets
- flax seed, ground – 2 tablespoons
- butter – 2 tablespoons
Take a microwave safe bowl and add your butter to it and then melt the butter in your microwave. This should take approximately 30 seconds. Then add the egg to the bowl and whisk the egg and butter. After that just add all of the other ingredients and mix them thoroughly together. Place the bowl in the microwave for about 60 seconds or so. You may prefer cooking the cake a little bit longer. Just make sure that the egg is totally cooked. When it is cooked the way you like it, let it cool down and then enjoy. You can top this with some sugar free whipped cream. You can make your own whipped cream just by taking heavy cream and use a hand mixer to mix it until stiff peaks form, You can use stevia to sweeten the whipped cream. To make a totally decadent treat you may top this with berries.
Here are the most common mistakes I see when people are following a Ketosis diet:
One of the most common mistakes that I see with people doing a ketosis diet is that they’re eating too much protein. When you eat too much protein that can also increase the amount of insulin that is produced by your body and this will put you into fat storing mode instead of fat burning mode. Everyone thinks that on the ketosis diet you can eat as much protein as you want but that is totally wrong. Most people need approximately 3 to 6 ounces of protein per meal. If you are 20 years old or younger and your metabolism is higher you can probably eat more protein. And if you are doing heavy weight lifting you may want to consume more protein. But for most of us 3 to 6 ounces of protein per meal is sufficient.
The second most common mistake that I see on the ketosis diet is that people stop eating vegetables. Vegetables are a necessary part of your body because they provide you with a multitude of vitamins and minerals especially potassium. Potassium is necessary it is an important electrolyte that helps regulate the muscles of the body and it also helps flush fat out of your body.
Mistake #3 is that people are actually eating too many carbohydrates. You have to be careful for the sugar in foods such as fruit, vitamin water, rice, pasta and bread. You have to be especially careful reading the ingredients of all the beverages that you are drinking. Many of the drinks that people are consuming are loaded with sugar and this will definitely keep you out of ketosis and cause you to gain weight. But don’t worry about counting the carbohydrates in your vegetables because when it comes to vegetables you can eat as many as you want. If you can keep a food log and track the amount of carbohydrates you or eating throughout the day you may be surprised how many carbohydrates you are truly eating. That’s why I usually recommend that people keep a food journal or diary. And after the first month or so you usually developed good healthy habits and automatically choose the right type of foods and the proper portion sizes.
Mistake #4 is that you can be too concerned with your body weight. Often times when following a ketosis diet your body is losing weight but developing muscle at the same time. So I usually recommend that people pay more attention to their physique, to their waist measurement and how their clothing is fitting. Many times a person may not be losing that much weight on the scale but they are rapidly dropping dress sizes.
I hope that you enjoy these recipes and I certainly hope that you enjoyed this information on the common pitfalls of the ketosis diet.
