Being Overweight – Obese Causes 40% of All Cancer in United States
If you are one of our Philadelphia Medical Weight Loss Patients or Bucks County Weight Loss Patients, you know that every week or every other week I like to post articles on our site of great tasting recipes that can help you reach your weight loss goals or a review of new studies, reports and/or fitness trends. This week I am going to review and alarming report put out by the CDC that tells us that being overweight – obese is responsible for as much as 40% of all the cancer diagnosed in the United States. Two additional resources that I used were Helio.com and Reuters.com. Both these resources did an excellent job of summarizing the report put out by the CDC.
According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the CDC…
There are 13 cancers that are associated with being overweight and obese and they cause approximately 40% of all the diagnosis of cancers in the United States. According to Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D. the director of the CDC, the majority of American adults weigh more than recommended – and being overweight or obese puts people at high risk for a number of cancers – so these findings are definitely a cause for concern. By getting to and keeping a healthy weight, we all can play a role in cancer prevention.
US health officials have stated that this significant increase in cancers caused by being overweight and obese is threatening to reverse the progress in reducing the numbers of cancers diagnosed in the United States every year. It is staggering that in 2014 there were 631,604 people in the United States were diagnosed with the cancer associated with being overweight or obese. It’s quite alarming that the overall rate of new cancer diagnosis sees has decreased since the 1990s but the rates for overweight related and obesity -related cancers have been rising. In routers.com they quote Dr. Anne Schuchat of the CDC saying that these statistics show that in some cancers were going in the wrong direction.
Dr. Schuchat also stated that at least half of Americans are not aware of this link between being overweight – obese and cancer. And that reports suggest that healthcare providers in the United States need to make it totally clear to patients that there is a link between being overweight/obese and cancer and they must encourage patients to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
Justin 2014 alone, these cancers associated with being overweight – obese made up 40% of the 1.6 million cancers diagnosed that year. And they caused 55% of the cancers diagnosed in women and 24% of the cancers diagnosed in men.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the 13 cancers that are associated with overweight and obesity include: breast cancer – postmenopausal breast cancer, thyroid cancer, gallbladder cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, pancreas cancer, kidney cancer, ovary cancer, cancer of the uterus, colon cancer, rectum – colorectal cancer, meningioma, multiple myeloma and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.
The CDC recommends that clinicians counsel patients on maintaining a healthy body weight and that they refer patients with obesity to intensive programs. So, they are recommending that maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the key ingredients to improving overall health and wellness and preventing cancer.
Now there are many indicators that will help you to determine what your good healthy body weight. One of them is the BMI. A BMI between 18.5 – 24.9 is considered normal, a BMI of 25 – 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 and above is considered obese. Another indicator can be the size of your waist. From current literature is recommended that females have a waist circumference not greater than 31.5 inches; and men have a waist circumference of 37 inches or less. Your body fat percentages is also a good method to determine what your healthy weight should be. In the office we use these tools to determine what your healthy weight should be.
So aside from being able to fit in your skinny jeans and your bathing suit, maintaining a healthy body weight can help you improve your overall health and wellness and prevent many illnesses. And according to the report put out by the CDC it seems that maintaining a healthy body weight can possibly even help prevent cancer.
I hope you take this information to heart and it helps motivate you to achieve your weight loss goals.

5 Zero Calorie Hunger Busters by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia
In today’s post I am going to review and interesting Journal article I recently read on things that can trigger your cravings and give you 5 easy tips to help control your appetite.
I recently read an article in the journal Brain and Cognition, and it stated that flipping through food magazines and even watching the ever more popular cooking shows can cause you to salivate even if you are not really hungry. But if you are hungry they can make you feel like you are starving. So have a large bottle of water with you to quiet those hunger pains.
Your feelings and emotions can also trigger your hungry. I know that stress, sadness and grief always make me more hungry.Y
So here are 5 easy tips to help curb your cravings and appetite.
One of the oldest diet tips I know is to fill your tummy with water. Or you can eat foods that have lots of liquid like beef or chicken broth. Snack on celery in between meals because they also contain lots of water. Vegetables are great because they give you lots of healthy nutrition that you body needs
Get Physical, when you start to feel hungry drink some water and go for a walk for 15-20 minutes. You can also ride a stationary bike at home, walk on a treadmill or just walk up and down the steps in your house (but don’t trip!). Some of our patients like to do body-weight exercises like jumping jacks or pushups or just run in place. The exercise will help burn calories and also help to reduce your appetite.
One of Dr. Levinstein’s weight loss tips is to brush and floss your teeth after dinner to help you not stack after dinner.
Another tip is to enjoy some sugar-free gum. This is a tip that I use, especially when I am really hungry and not able to eat.
My wife’s favorite weight loss tip is to put a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton swab, then place them in a jar with a lid. When you are hungry just unscrew the lid and smell the peppermint. This should help should help curb your appetite.
I hope you enjoy these weight loss tips! If you would like more information on our weight loss program just give us a call at 215-821-7336

And it seems that most of us have put on a few extra pounds as we were enjoying this past summer. So here are the recipes:
With all of the juicing recipes I’m going to give you in this article you have the option to add water to it to dilute it if necessary. If you are watching your carbs in your sugar intake you may have to change the recipes a bit by reducing the quantity of fruit for each particular recipe.
Personally for myself I do not eat more than two pieces of fruit per day. For example if the recipe calls for 4 pieces of fruit I would just use a quarter of each of the individual fruits and make my drink that way. If you are into the high intensity phase of your exercise program and you are feeling overly tired these strings are good for a quick boost of energy. Just be sure to dilute them a bit by adding water to the recipe. You can also add Spirulina or any type of green vegetable powder to any of these juice recipes.
