Today August 7, 2015 I have officially reached a milestone. I have lost 82 pounds over the past several months. In the beginning of this year I weighed 247 pounds and this morning I am 165 pounds. I am literally fitting into skinny jeans. And this morning my wife told me I am too skinny. I never thought anyone would ever tell me that I was too skinny.
If you are one of our medical weight loss patients in our Philadelphia or Bucks County office you know my story. And even if you just follow this blog on our website you probably have read some of the very personal articles that I have written throughout this past year. An abbreviated version is I was in a car accident some time ago and herniated the majority of the discs in my spine. Suffice to say waking up with pain each and every day and not being able to do any type of exercise because of the pain caused me to eat, and eat and eat.
Eating, was the only thing that I can do that did not cause me pain. So I just got plain old fat. And I just accepted this as the way life was going to be after the age of 50. But my overeating and lack of any type of physical activity made me not only fat but I was diagnosed with diabetes at the beginning of the year. This made the picture of growing old with my wife and living to see my 3 children hopefully one day give me grand-children a very dark and gloomy picture. Diabetes increases your chances of heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure and a multitude of other serious health conditions that can kill you.
This woke me up! I realized that I had to take control of my health. Just because I was over 50 and just because my spine is a wreck – I was not going to accept an early death.
So I set out and researched everything possible on diabetes and the proper nutrition eating plan in the hopes of curing my diabetes. Well it turns out that almost everything that is online and everything that is printed in the pamphlets and all the other materials for diabetes is wrong for me. I followed everything that they said to the finest detail and my diabetes was getting worse, my sugar levels were getting higher.
I have to say I was discouraged and almost lost hope but my Mother always told me that nothing worth having comes easy in life. So I did more research – I dug deep into the Biochemistry of the body and how different foods cause different reactions in our body’s chemistry and our hormones. And I found the answer!
As it turns out all I had to do was tweak the diet that we normally give to our patients who are weight loss resistant. Because of this diet I have lost 82 pounds and my blood sugar levels are normal.
For the record, I think my wife is correct and 165 pounds is a bit too skinny for me. I think I look better somewhere between 168 pounds and 171 lbs. So now I have to tweak my diet just a little. Quite honestly I do not mind fluctuating between 165 pounds and 171 pounds, when I weighed 247 pounds at the beginning of the year.
